Director of Coaching
Coach Carl, a native of Newry, N. Ireland, is now in his tenth year at Sand & Surf, his fourth as the Director of Coaching. Carl brings a wealth of knowledge with his playing background and education to youth soccer. Carl has developed a curriculum and program that gives players a chance to grow technically & tactically while having a great sporting experience along the way. He believes “You're only as good as your staff” so he makes sure that the coaching staff gets an opportunity to gain experience and education that will help develop their skills. Over the past three years as Director, Carl has helped grow the club program to become a known name within the soccer community. He’s also worked on building recreational programs that now give over a thousand players' exposure to the club. He works closely with a management team and BOD to come up with the best possible strategy for Sand & Surf players, members, and coaches. His goal is to give each and every player, and family, the opportunity to enjoy the sport within a great community culture. Carl holds a BA in Sports Coaching alongside USSF and UEFA qualifications.

Coach Sam is a native of Wigan, England. Sam is now in his fifth year at Sand & Surf and holds a role as the Assistant Director. Sam Played for the Youth Academies of Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic before moving to the US to play in college. Sam played at the University of Rio Grande (OH) and then Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (FL) where he was named an All-American. Sam has been coaching for 9 years and has experience coaching College, Professional Academy, High School, Club Soccer, and Rec Soccer. Sam is also the assistant coach to DOC Carl Dickson at Marlborough high school, on the girls Varsity team.

Coach Stephen, a native of Louisiana, is now in his eighth year at Sand & Surf and holds a role as the Operations director. Stephen is a former Division 2 college goalkeeper at Cal State Los Angeles, where he was an assistant coach for 4 years. He helped Cal State LA to a 41-11-10 record and three NCAA tournament appearances during his college career, winning a Far West Regional Championship in 2014. Currently, Stephen is at Marymount California University as an Assistant Coach. Stephen holds an "A" License through US Soccer (US Soccer’s highest coaching credential) as well as a USSF Goalkeeper Diploma.

Coach Dan comes from London, England, and is currently in his fifth year at Sand & Surf, where he holds a role as the Social Media and Camp Director. Dan has various playing experiences with professional academies, such as Arsenal, Charlton Athletic, and most recently Chelsea FC, alongside a semi-professional career. Dan then moved to the U.S. to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Business Management and Marketing. Through that period, he captained West Alabama his freshman and sophomore year, before transferring to Marymount California University, where he won the conference two years in a row and played in the National Tournament. Dan alongside his club duties recently assisted on the LA Harbor Junior College men's team and also currently coaches the freshman team at Loyola High School in downtown Los Angeles, in what has been a ten-year coaching journey thus far.

Coach Liam, born and raised in Fresno, CA, played college soccer for Fresno City and Cal Poly Pomona. Liam is currently in his sixth year with Sand & Surf, holding a role as the Youth Development Director. As soon as his playing career was over, Liam immediately began coaching back home in Fresno. After 3 years coaching high school, college, and travel soccer in Fresno, Liam moved to Los Angeles to further his coaching career. Along with leading multiple Sand & Surf teams, Liam is currently on the coaching staff at Marlborough High School as the Middle School head coach and previously acted as UK International's Program Manager in Santa Monica (AYSO Region 20).

Coach Ben, a native of Oxford, England is in his fifth year at Sand & Surf. Ben developed a deep passion for soccer over many years of playing and coaching. His playing career involved various youth teams in England, including representing Oxford United and Oxford City football clubs. This led to a semi-pro soccer career that lasted 15 years in England’s lower leagues, primarily representing clubs in Southern England. Ben began coaching 8 years ago for the Oxford United Youth Academy and also served as its head of education. Ben arrived in the U.S in 2015 and now also coaches at Windward High School in Mar Vista, alongside his duties as the assistant Athletic Director.

Coach Kevin was born and raised in France and is currently in his fourth year with Sand & Surf. Kevin's coaching career began 12 years ago with his former Club Annecy FC, where he also used to play as a semi professional player (CFA2). Kevin moved to Los Angeles 6 years ago to study at Santa Monica College and had the chance to practice with the LA Galaxy before his previous US visa had ended. Kevin is a motivated student of the global game and has developed a strong reputation among players, parents, and his peers as a committed and talented developer of youth talent. His coaching program is based on possession-based soccer development with a French emphasis. Kevin also now play as a Street Soccer player and Member of “Bola”, the first US street Soccer team to represent the USA at the World Cup which was in October 2016, in Manchester.

Coach Josh originally from Hastings, England, is entering his 5th year of coaching club soccer in the South Bay area. Upon leaving Peterborough, Josh had the opportunity to try out at Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund and spent several weeks training alongside German World Cup hero Mario Gotze. Josh then returned to play Semi-Pro at his hometown club Hastings United where they would achieve a famous FA Cup run before losing out to English Championship side Middlesbrough in the 3rd round. Josh then came to California to earn a degree in Business Management at Marymount University, after completing his AA degree at Lake Tahoe College.

Coach Aaron is originally from Bournemouth, England, and is now in his third year at Sand & Surf. Aaron has been in the United States since 2015 and involved in coaching the game since 2010. Aaron's playing experience includes representing his state team and playing for Portsmouth academy. Aaron is also currently the head coach of Marlborough's Middle School soccer team, alongside his focus on coaching our fundamental-aged teams here at Sand & Surf.

Coach Talita is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and is currently in her third year with Sand & Surf. Talita played soccer professionally for several teams in Brazil (Corinthians, Palmeiras, Portuguesa), Japan (Hokkaido), and Iceland. She also went on to represent the Brazilian National Team in a tournament in Serbia. Talita attended Franklin Pierce University in the US, where she received a full-ride scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management. Talita’s coaching philosophy is a product of many different cultural experiences, which she has blended into a unique coaching style. Talita has coached all levels, including college, high school, and club soccer.

Coach Eddie is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and is now in his third year at Sand & Surf. As a youth player in Brazil, Eddie played for both Corinthians S.C and S.E Palmeiras' prestigious academies. Eddie then attended the University of Rio Grande in Ohio, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Sports and Exercise Science. After graduation, Eddie played professional soccer as an attacking midfielder in Japan for Thespakusatsu in the 2013 and 2014 J-league seasons.

Coach Maddie was born and raised in San Pedro, California where she played soccer, softball, and basketball, and is now in her second year at Sand & Surf. Wanting to continue her development in soccer, Maddie spent seven years playing at FRAM Soccer Club. Maddie is currently a third-year student pursuing a business management and marketing career at Marymount California University, whilst captaining the women’s soccer team. As a starting freshman, Maddie was awarded Second Team Cal Pac Conference, also recently winning the Cal Pac Conference title. Maddie has been working with Sand and Surf for the past two years for the winter and summer camps, Maddie is very much looking forward to furthering her coaching career with Sand and Surf.

Coach Richie, a former midfielder from Torrance, CA is currently in his second year at Sand & Surf. Richie was an All-Pioneer league First team honoree in his final two seasons as well as All-CIF section selection his junior and senior years at South Torrance High. Richie was a 4-year varsity member and ODP Regional team member in 2013 and 2014. Richie went on to play at the University of the Pacific in the WCC and transferred after his Sophomore season to UNC Asheville, playing in the Big South. This past year, Richie has been coaching locally at his alma mater high school managing the Frosh/Soph team and also working at TOCA specializing in 1 on 1 lessons.

Coach Emily was born and raised in Long Island, New York, and this is her first year with Sand & Surf. Emily competed in the highest level of club soccer, with Farmingdale F.C in the ECNL conference. Pivoting to collegiate athletics she competed at the Division 1 level as the starting goalkeeper for Temple University in the Big East conference. Emily then went on to transfer back to her home state of New York to play at StonyBrook University. Emily was awarded player of the year and broke a school record; most saves in a game by a Stony Brook goalkeeper since 1999. Emily graduated StonyBrook University as a double major with her bachelor's of Science. Emily then moved out to California in 2017 where she also currently works in the professional sports and entertainment industry.

Coach Katharine is a Manhattan Beach native and in her first year as a coach with Sand and Surf Soccer Club. As a club alumna, she is excited that her soccer journey has come full circle to bring her to her first coaching role. She has enjoyed working at Sand and Surf’s camps and development programs. Katharine also played for the Mira Costa High School girls program as well as the Northeastern University Women’s Club program. Katharine is currently pursuing a B.A. in Communications Studies at Loyola Marymount University. This fall will mark her final year, and she is excited to finish off her college education while spending time coaching at the club she calls home.

Coach Kyle was born and raised in Valencia California and is in his first year at Sand & Surf. Kyle played college soccer at UCSB where he won the 2006 NCAA National Championship. Kyle then went on to play 10 years in Major League Soccer for Real Salt Lake, Chicago Fire, New York Red Bulls, and Atlanta United. During his years of playing professionally, he was the Director of Goalkeeping for the Manhattan Kickers and was a player-coach for the New York Red Bulls, on top of assisting the Goalkeeper coach in the Chicago Fire Academy. After retiring from playing professionally, Kyle returned to the South Bay and was the Goalkeeper Coach for surrounding clubs in the area.

Coach Jamie is originally from Hastings, England, and in his first year at Sand & Surf. Jamie has been coaching soccer for around 11 years in the UK and U.S, subsequently making the decision at 20 years old to come to the U.S. to pursue a career in coaching where he has now resided for seven years. Jamie spent five years at Liverpool FC SoCal, originally know as LA Galaxy Orange country, before coming to Sand and Surf. Jamie has worked predominately in the foundation age groups (7v7 & 9v9) where he has taken flight 3 teams to flight 1. He was also given the role of U8 pre-club academy director. Jamie's aim is to provide a fun but competitive environment to enhance young players technical and tactical abilities.

Coach Ronaldo is originally from Minas Gerais, Brazil, and is in his first year with Sand & Surf. Ronaldo grew up playing for several academies before moving to the U.S. to pursue playing college soccer. He started his college career at NAIA School, Rocky Mountain College until he transferred to Marymount California University where he graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Management, Marketing, and Sports Management. While in college, Ronaldo also played in the USL 2 with Albuquerque Sol, where he not only captained the team but also helped them reach the national quarterfinals. After graduation, he became the men’s assistant soccer coach at Marymount California University and helped the program to win four conference titles and reach the national championship semifinal in 2017. He is currently the South High School Girls Varsity Coach where he recently won a league title and reached the CIF final. In 2020, Ronaldo also graduated with a master's in Exercise science and sports performance.
